The redeveloped Rural Emergency Obstetric Training (REOT) course equips rural and remote clinicians with the practical skills, confidence, and structured approaches needed to manage maternity and neonatal emergencies.

Through a blend of 8 hours of interactive online pre-learning and an intensive one-day face-to-face workshop, participants will gain hands-on experience in managing obstetric emergencies, responding to complications in late pregnancy and labour and performing Neonatal Resuscitation for First Responders in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

Learning objectives
  • Discuss the role of antenatal assessment in rural and emergency contexts, including identification of high-risk pregnancies and referral pathways.
  • Perform intrapartum assessments to support clinical decision-making.
  • Manage normal labour and delivery using appropriate clinical interventions and timely escalation when required.
  • Recognise and manage common late trimester and intrapartum complications.
  • Identify and respond to obstetric emergencies such as shoulder dystocia, postpartum haemorrhage, sepsis, and unplanned vaginal breech birth.
  • Plan and perform neonatal first response, including team preparation, basic airway support, vascular access (IV/IO), and early postnatal care.
  • Communicate effectively with women and families in emergencies, including during perinatal loss, and apply principles of cultural safety and consent.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to coordinate care, complete documentation, and support retrieval and transfer processes.
Assessment information
  • Pass the multiple-choice quiz at the end of each online module. The pass mark is 80%, and multiple attempts are allowed.
  • Successfully complete the Guided Competency Validation Assessment, which is undertaken during the face-to-face workshop.
Additional information

It is mandatory that participants be present for the entire duration of the Advanced Airway course (8am to 5pm local time). Therefore it is highly recommended for interstate travellers to arrive at the course location at least one day prior to the commencement of the course.


If for any reason a participant arrives after the course has commenced or departs before the close of course, they will be ineligible to receive a Certificate of Attendance or the allocated CDP/ QI&CPD points. The participant will be required to re-book which will incur additional charges.
