Supervising IMG rural generalist registrars in rural and remote Australia
International medical graduates (IMGs) comprise a third of the Australian medical workforce, and a large majority of them work in rural Australia. Rural generalists in-training are commonly and increasingly more likely to be IMGs. The ability of the supervisor of these registrars to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment will be enhanced by following principles such as avoiding generalisations or stereotyping, identifying differences rather than deficits, and fostering a culture of learning and feedback. Furthermore, understanding the unique issues that more commonly arise in IMG RG registrars, especially in rural and remote areas as well as early in placements, will help successful and enjoyable placements.
