Supporting Children and Families in General Practice After a Natural Disaster or Community Trauma, is for GPs working with families and children affected by natural disasters such as fire, floods or storms, or by community trauma events.

It is based on the understanding that natural disasters and community trauma can have a profound impact on children’s social and emotional wellbeing, and that GPs are well placed to work with children, parents and families to protect children from the impact of these events.

As you progress through this course, you will be offered practical guides and tips for supporting children and families in the immediate aftermath, the short-term and long-term following a natural disaster or community trauma.

Learning objectives
  • Identify ways that natural disasters and community trauma events impact on children’s mental health and wellbeing.
  • Identify signs and symptoms of psychological distress in children.
  • Determine appropriate resources to provide support to parents and families to help promote the resilience of their children.
Assessment information

Participants self-assess at the start of the course, answering 4 multiple choice questions. The same questions are then asked again at the end of the course to assess progreess. the 4 questions are:

1. I am knowledgeable about the impact of natural disasters and community trauma events on children’s mental health and wellbeing.

2. I feel confident I can identify signs and symptoms of psychological distress in children.

3. I feel equipped to be able to interact with, and provide support to, children to help promote their resilience.

4. I feel equipped to be able to provide support to a parent and/or family to help promote the resilience of their children
