RANZCOG Fetal Surveillance Education Program – Online Program (OFSEP) - 02/01/2023 - 31/12/2025

OFSEP is designed to improve the understanding, interpretation and management of the cardiotocograph (CTG) and associated fetal monitoring techniques. It allows users to have individual login, individual tracking, regular assessments and certification upon completion. The sequential compliance based pathway is set up to ensure prerequisite knowledge and skills are assessed and demonstrated appropriately, before the next module can be accessed. The online program hopes to gain a wider reach than the face to face lectures alone and provide education to all health professionals in Australia, New Zealand and internationally who are involved in antenatal and intrapartum care.

The online program requires 4 hours reading time and comprehensively addresses the following topics:

  • Utero placental anatomy and physiology
  • The physiology of fetal heart rate control
  • Fetal placental Doppler
  • Fetal growth restriction
  • Fetal monitoring
  • The normal CTG
  • Maternal heart rate monitoring
  • The abnormal CTG
  • Clinical cases

Learning objectives

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Appreciate the importance of an understanding of fetal physiology in interpreting CTGs.
  2. Have an improved understanding of the physiological genesis of the fetal heart rate and its patterns, as pertaining to the CTG.
  3. Have improved their ability and confidence in interpreting and responding appropriately to antenatal and intrapartum CTGs, using a physiological approach.
  4. Have improved their awareness of the resources available to assist in CTG interpretation and management.
  5. Consider implementing an ongoing, multidisciplinary review of intrapartum CTGs in their healthcare facility.
Assessment information

Each module of the online program relates to a particular skill or knowledge base critical to the appropriate interpretation and management of an antenatal or intrapartum CTG. The online program is designed to address the learning objectives stated above, by providing a sequential, compliance based pathway and a range of educational resources to achieve the appropriate knowledge and skills. The additional resources include, scrolling CTGs, interactive flash animations, text based material and links to additional resources

Each participant must achieve a score of 80% in a short multiple choice assessment at the end of each module; addressing key objectives from that module. If a score of less that 80% is achieved, the assessment is temporarily locked after the second attempt. The participant is encouraged to review the module and reattempt the quiz after 30 minutes. Questions and answers are rotated to avoid repetition and feedback is provided to aid learning. A final summative assessment is provided after completing all modules to allow participants to reflect on their learning and understanding of the topics discussed in the modules.

Additional infomation

The following support materials are available to further assist participants’ learning experience:

  • Participants can attend the FSEP face-to-face workshops that are running across Australia and New Zealand for more interactive discussion with other participants and FSEP educators
  • The FSEP in conjunction with Monash Health had published the book, ‘Assessing Fetal Wellbeing: A Practical Guide’ to support the program and encourage further reading/reference. The book is available for purchase to all through the FSEP website. A e-book version is also available for purchase.
  • The RANZCOG Intrapartum Fetal Surveillance Clinical Guidelines available for download free from the RANZCOG and FSEP websites.
