Congestive Cardiac Failure (CCF) (P2CDC) - 01/01/2023 - 31/12/2025

This course begins with an overview of congestive cardiac failure including classification guidelines and prevention strategies. The diagnosis, pathophysiology and investigation of heart failure are outlined including charts, diagrams and images. Causes of heart failure including myocyte damage and loss, abnormal loading conditions and arrhythmias are covered. Further information on aetiology and ongoing assessment in CCF where causes of heart failure are not apparent from the history, examination and investigations are outlined. The management and co-morbidities of these symptoms are discussed. The course concludes with a discussion on the management and prognosis of acute heart failure including end of life care.

Pre/Post activity
The pre-course reflective activity provides an opportunity to reflect on their current understanding and why they want to improve their knowledge and skills. Researching an article and documenting it provides additional reflection and a learning opportunity prior to commencing the course. The reinforcing activity is designed for GPs to reflect on key learning points from the course, how they have started to implement learning into their clinical practice and future plans in this area.
Learning objectives

  1. Describe the risk factors, clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria for CCF and apply these in clinical setting scenarios.
  2. Apply the current evidence to the management of CCF in general practice scenarios.
Assessment information

Successfully complete 11 Knowledge based MCQs (80% pass).
Successfully complete 11 Applied Knowledge MCQs (80% pass). 
Exams are based on the course content. Exams can be repeated and are open book. Exams do not have to be completed in one sitting.
