Hospital emergency departments in rural areas play an important role in treating mental illness.

Therefore practitioners who work in these departments require considerable practical skills in urgent assessment, investigation and/or management of acute mental health problems.

This course provides 3 comprehensive modules.

Module 1: Risks Associated with Deliberate Self harm 

  • Assessing suicidal risk in the Emergency Department
  • Strangulation and Hanging

Module 2: Risks Associated with Drug Use

  • Poppers and Whippets N2O Alkyl nitrates Abuse
  • Cannabis hyperemesis syndrome
  • Management of stimulants
  • Adolescent Addiction
  • Dealing with Drug Seeking

Module 3: Risks Associated with Violent behaviour  

  • Occupational Violence Duty of Care
  • Managing behaviours of concern in the Paediatric ED
  • Dealing with difficult people
  • The management of acute agitation in the emergency setting
