Gut Health Science Course - 01/01/2026 - 31/12/2026

The curriculum is evidence based - peer reviewed publications and designed according to the criteria set down by the Rome IV (2016) for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders(FGIDs).

  • 'Alteration of the gut-brain interaction’ :includes 5 disorders. These are :
    • Motility disturbance
    • Visceral hypersensitivity
    • Altered mucosal and immune function
    • Altered gut microbiota
    • Altered central nervous system (CNS) processing

Rome IV describes FGIDs as ‘a group of disorders classified by GI symptoms related to any combination of ’ the above 5 conditions.  

There are 6 online modules in this course:

Module 1 Basic Introduction

Module 2.1 – 2.5  Altered gut microbiota: Causative factors

Module 3.1 – Altered CNS processing & Altered gut microbiota : Neurocognitive impairment

Module 3.2 – Altered CNS processing (fatigue , mental fatigue) & Altered gut microbiota  

Module 3.3 – Altered CNS processing (sleep, anxiety & moods) & Altered gut microbiota  

Module 4 – Visceral Hypersensitivity & Altered gut microbiota  

Module 5 – Motility disturbance & Altered gut microbiota  

Module 6  - Altered mucosal  & Altered gut microbiota

Video modules and questionnaire exam to get Certification to be qualified as being able to manage Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Functional Gastro intestinal Disorder as per ROME IV (2016) criteria. https://theromefoundation.org/rome-iv/rome-iv-criteria/
Learning objectives

To manage Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Functional Gastro intestinal Disorders (FGID) and refer to dietician with prescribed  precision dietetics as per Care Plan ( Enhanced Care Pan 723 referral ) under Medicare.

Participants will understand:

  • when to prescribe antibiotics and which form
  • specific nutrition deficiency - esp low Ferritin, low fat soluble vitamins  and how to manage
  • how to juggle anti-depressants in the background of a Herxheimer reaction 
  • FODMAP, the different sugars, solute and insoluble fibres, Biogenic amines, and it's interactions with imbalanced gut microbiota
  • how to manage GERD and work with PPIs in the presence of balanced microbiota
  • issues of Lipolysis in imbalance microbiota and why people put on weight " jsut like that"
  • how to manage severe refractive eczema and biogenic amines
  • how to manage IBS Constipation-and diarrhoea and restore normal bowel motions 
Assessment information

MCQ will address basic requirements of all 6 modules.
