Capacity Building in Global Emergency Care - 27/07/2026 - 01/11/2026

The CBGEC course aims to develop the knowledge and skills of current and future GEC practitioners in capacity building.  CBGEC practitioners work in diverse settings, often in the context of limited resources and under-developed emergency care systems.  This course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to develop, deliver and evaluate safe and effective CBGEC capacity building programs in collaboration with local partners.

Learning objectives
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the definition and role of global emergency care and how emergency care is linked to global health priorities and activities.
  2. Summarise the status of emergency care globally.
  3. Outline the principles of capacity development and effective partnership and appreciate the ethical challenges associated with global health collaborations and experiences.
  4. Outline an approach to conducting a needs assessment of emergency care in a resource- limited context.
  5. Develop a project framework for delivering an emergency care capacity development project in a resource-limited context.
  6. Develop a monitoring and evaluation plan for an emergency care capacity development project in a resource-limited context.
  7. Develop a relevant research question for a global emergency care setting.
  8. Outline the principles of effective teaching and training in cross-cultural and resource-limited settings.
  9. Outline the health-related priorities for emergency care system disaster preparedness in a resource-limited environment.
  10. Demonstrate an increased level of preparedness to undertake a field-based role for a global emergency care capacity development project.
  11. Demonstrate an understanding of how global structures of race, gender, class, politics, socio-economics and climate change impact on and intersect with health and emergency care systems.
Assessment information

1. Online discussion forum (six posts, total 2,400 words) – 40%

2. Personal reflection on face-to-face workshop (1200 words) - 20%

3. Written report (2400 words) – 40%
