FPS ST - Focussed Psychological Skills Training (FPS ST - Level 2) - 01/01/2026 - 31/12/2026

This FPS Level 2 Skills Training course is designed for general practitioners who have completed Level 1 training and seek certification to deliver higher-level Focussed Psychological Strategies in general practice. The course equips GPs with evidence-based psychological intervention skills delivered as part of an ongoing GP Mental Health Treatment Plan (GPMHTP).

Modules cover Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills training with psychoeducation, and Motivational Interviewing, including problem solving and stress management. CBT and IPT components align with Better Access provisions.

The course is delivered in four stages using an interactive format that includes videos, quizzes, and case studies. Case material focuses on common mental health presentations such as anxiety, depression, trauma, bereavement, and role transitions, with a strong patient-centred approach that incorporates lived experience perspectives.

Feedback, reflection, and case review are core components of the program. Designed to be practical and accessible, the course supports GPs working across urban and rural settings to strengthen psychological care within primary practice.

Assessment information

This activity incorporates multiple assessment methods designed to reinforce learning, support reflective practice, and assess participant application of focused psychological strategies in general practice.

Participants engage in interactive case-based discussions aligned with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). These scenarios require learners to apply therapeutic frameworks, select appropriate interventions, and reflect on clinical decision-making relevant to their own practice.

Modules include structured knowledge checks and quizzes to consolidate key concepts, with participants able to review feedback and reinforce learning. Reflective activities support integration of psychological strategies into routine clinical care.

The course also incorporates outcome-focused evaluation through the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework, enabling participants to review their clinical approach, assess patient outcomes, and identify opportunities for improvement.

Together, these assessment activities support skill development, reflective learning, and safe, evidence-based application of focused psychological strategies within general practice.
