Breast Cancer - Treatment Options

The Breast cancer – treatment options course was developed by Cancer Australia and adapted for online delivery by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).

This course focuses on the available treatment options following diagnosis and is divided into two parts. Module 1 concentrates on the referral process, treatment team and surgical treatment options. Module 2 covers chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal and targeted therapies.

Learning objectives

On completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Understand the components involved in breast cancer diagnosis including through patient medical history and clinical examination, imaging and biopsy (triple test).
  • Describe the role of the general practitioner (GP) throughout the patient’s journey including referral, education and support for the patient, their family and carers, and in providing ongoing patient-centred follow-up care.
  • Understand the importance and role of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and who is involved.
  • Understand the available treatment options for early breast cancer including types of surgery (breast-conserving surgery and reconstructive surgery), chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy (endocrine therapy) and targeted therapies.
  • Understand the common side effects of these treatments, including treatment-related emergencies.
  • Know the appropriate referral pathways for treatment, and how to provide support and information to women, their families and carers.

access relevant resources, and access the additional Cancer Australia online courses about breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and care which complement this module. Each module is accredited for continuing professional development hours.
