Foundations of Rural Generalist Supervision: Clinical Supervision and Random Case Analysis

In this module, we will explore Random Case Analysis (RCA), a supervision and teaching technique for gaining insight into a doctor’s clinical practice and for learning. RCA is particularly useful in ensuring patient safety when a supervised doctor is not required to routinely contact their supervisor for review of all patient care. For example, in one study of the use of RCA with Australian GP registrars, 30% of supervisors found a patient safety concern and 16% needed to contact a patient to remedy the problem.

Learning objectives

At the end of this module a supervisor will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast methods used to ensure patient safety when routine review of all patients is no longer required.
  • Undertake random case analysis with a supervised doctor.
  • Explore a supervised doctor’s clinical reasoning using ‘what’, ‘why’, and ‘what if’ questions.
  • Provide feedback and assessment based on random case analysis.
