Alcohol and Other Drugs - Medicolegal Considerations (non-incentivised)

Legal and ethical considerations exist in all aspects of medical practice, particularly when it comes to treating patients with substance use issues, simply due to the criminal law and legal status of possession and consumption in Australia.

This self-paced course aims to improve your confidence in working with people who use substances, to efficiently address associated medico-legal challenges.

This course will take approximately 3 hours to complete.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an awareness of the legal, moral and ethical aspects of the decisions made in clinical practice, within the context of treating patients with substance use concerns
  • Reflect on confidentiality complexities for patients who use substances
  • Write treatment plans and reports which meet statutory requirements for patients who use substances, under mandatory reporting, emplyement, or other medicolegal situations
  • Respond effectively to the impaired patient or practitioner, whilst supporting them in manageing treatment
