Communicating with parents - supporting child mental health

This course focuses on developing strategies for rural generalists and rural generalist registrars to improve communication with parents about their children. The course provides an overview of child mental health, as well as a structure with which to approach conversations with parents.

This course has been developed in collaboration with Emerging Minds.

Learning objectives

On completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Appreciate the importance of parental mental and physical health and environment on child mental health.
  • Apply an understanding of culture, rural or remote environment, parent factors and child factors to communicating with parents about their children.
  • Use the PERCS Conversation Guide to approach communication with parents about their children and pursue conversation that explores the parent-child relationship, and the interactions between the child and their world.
  • Apply history gained from parents to guide management, including appropriate referral.
