The aim of this course is to provide a structured approach to the assessment,
management, and ongoing care of patients presenting with mental health
conditions, and to enhance practical skills required for delivering mental
health care in rural and remote general practice settings.
Learning outcomes
This course will improve your ability
to deliver safe, effective and holistic mental health care, aligned with the
Rural Generalist Core Curriculum and GPMHSC standards:
4.1 Detect mental health issues experienced by consumers, recognising the
epidemiology, aetiology, and early signs of mental illness in primary
care.
4.2 Assess and manage mental illness through comprehensive
biopsychosocial history-taking, mental health risk assessment (including suicide
and self-harm), and application of diagnostic tools.
4.3 Develop
evidence-based, needs-based GP Mental Health Treatment Plans (GPMHTPs) in
consultation with consumers and carers, acknowledging cultural, social, and
linguistic factors.
4.4 Incorporate the lived experiences and needs of
consumers, carers, and other support networks into the mental health care
planning process.
4.5 Apply practice systems and strategies to coordinate
multidisciplinary care, manage risk systematically, and sustain self-care and
wellbeing in the context of general practice.
4.6 Appropriately use Medicare
Benefits Schedule (MBS) item numbers, including telehealth items, when preparing
and reviewing GPMHTPs.
Mental health skills accreditation - approved by
GPMHSC
This course was approved for Mental Health Skills
Accreditation with the General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration
(GPMHSC) for the 2026-28 triennium. This means that the completion of this
course (including engagement in the discussion forum) will provide you with
Level 1 Mental Health Skills Training (MHST).
