The aim of this course is to provide rural and remote GPs
with a structured, evidence-based approach to the assessment and management of
overweight and obesity, tailored to the realities of practice in low-resource
and geographically isolated settings. It will enhance your practical skills in
counselling, care planning, and the safe use of pharmacological and
non-pharmacological strategies, with a focus on improving patient outcomes in
your community.
Learning Outcomes
This course will improve your ability to provide safe, effective, and
culturally responsive weight management care in alignment with the ACRRM
Curriculum domains of primary and population health:
- Apply a structured, evidence-based approach to the
assessment and management of overweight and obesity in rural and remote
settings
- Implement behavioural support strategies, including
motivational interviewing, goal setting, and relapse prevention
- Safely prescribe, monitor, and review weight
management pharmacotherapies in line with current guidelines and PBS access
- Utilise available resources, including GPMPs,
HealthPathways, and culturally appropriate referral pathways
- Adapt management plans to the realities of
low-resource and geographically isolated settings, including limited access to
allied health services
- Provide longitudinal, patient-centred care that takes
into account comorbidities, social determinants of health, and the unique
dynamics of rural and remote communities
