Gout is a chronic condition characterised by sudden, severe pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness in one or more joints, most commonly affecting the first metatarsophalangeal joint. It is one of the most prevalent inflammatory joint diseases both globally and locally, posing a significant burden for many individuals in Australia. Self-reported prevalence rates range from 4.5% to 6.8%, with higher occurrences among males and specific ethnic groups.Despite its high prevalence, gout remains significantly undertreated, resulting in unnecessary pain, disability, and diminished quality of life. Fewer than 60% of patients are prescribed urate-lowering therapy (ULT), and among those prescribed ULT, less than 1 in 10 receive co-prescribed flare prophylaxis at the time of initiation. Additionally, among patients on therapy, fewer than 50% achieve target serum uric acid levels. Compounding this issue is the stigma surrounding gout, which discourages many individuals from seeking treatment or adhering to prescribed regimens.

Almost two thirds of adults in Australia live with overweight or obesity, and excess weight is the second leading contributor to Australia’s health burden. Lifestyle and behavioural interventions are the cornerstone of treatment in obesity however only a minority of people experience sustainable, long-term weight loss with those interventions alone. Australian and international obesity management guidelines therefore recommend a multicomponent approach to obesity care that includes pharmacotherapies in selected patients. Presented by GP Conjoint A/Prof Chee Khoo, this webinar reviews latest developments in weight loss pharmacotherapy and explores practical considerations around using medications as an adjunct to healthy behaviour change in the long-term management of overweight and obesity.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity has reached pandemic levels, posing a major threat to global health and healthcare systems. Treating obesity as a chronic disease is a growing and essential approach, as it recognises obesity as a complex, multifactorial condition rather than merely a lifestyle issue.1 This ‘Practice points’ activity follows on from the on-demand webinar of the same title, presented by Assoc. Prof Chee Khoo and reviews latest developments in weight loss pharmacotherapy and explores practical considerations around using medications as an adjunct to healthy behaviour change in the long-term management of overweight and obesity. It is an interactive PDF containing activities which can be done on your computer or printed out and filled out in paper form.

The mini audit Optimising Veteran Patient Care is designed to address the unique healthcare needs of veterans and enhance the ability of General Practitioners (GPs) to provide optimal, patient-centered care. Each year, approximately 6,000 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel transition to civilian life, with 20% leaving for medical reasons. These individuals often face complex health challenges, including physical injuries, mental health conditions, and chronic illnesses, necessitating tailored healthcare services. GPs play a pivotal role in delivering comprehensive care to veterans, who represent a patient population with distinct needs stemming from their service.
