Maternal sepsis accounts for a significant portion of maternal morbidity in Australia, second only to cardiovascular disease. With an incidence rate of around 1-2 cases/1000 deliveries and the 2nd highest cause for all maternal deaths, First Nations women and those living in rural and remote areas face higher risks due to disparities in healthcare access with women from lower socioeconomic backgrounds more susceptible due to barriers in accessing timely and adequate prenatal care. This special lunchtime webinar will utilise case-study examples including a focus on our most vulnerable patients, looking at: The risks for maternal sepsis, Prompt identification and diagnosis, Antibiotic therapy andamp; Supportive care. It will enable GPs to gain a better understanding of the risk factors of maternal sepsis, improve early recognition and management to prevent maternal morbidity andamp; mortality.

Allergy is a common problem encountered in primary care. This learning module is based on a national survey developed by Healthed and ASCIA to identify GPs’ main areas of educational need. Part 1 of this masterclass covers three key areas:First, allergy testing explained in practical terms for GPs. This is a topic area for which there is a lot of confusion about when allergy tests should be used and which tests are suitable in various clinical scenarios.Second, allergic rhinosinusitis, a very common allergy presentation which has substantial impacts on quality of life and yet is often suboptimally treated. Finally, resources for patients with various kinds of allergic conditions. ASCIA has developed a comprehensive range of highly useful resources that are often overlooked by many allergy patients and GPs, yet they would find them highly beneficial.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is one of the most common inherited neurological conditions, affecting about one in 3,000 people worldwide. Diagnosis is complicated by the heterogenous nature of the condition, however prompt referral to an appropriate specialist can greatly improve outcomes for patients. GPs play a pivotal role in the multidisciplinary to monitor symptoms and refer promptly where necessary, as well as managing the physical, psychological, and social challenges of living with a chronic and unpredictable condition.

This orientation is specifically designed for General Practitioners (GPs) to deepen their understanding of the unique role and significance of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) within the primary health care sector. While GPs are familiar with the general practice model, ACCHOs operate within a culturally specific framework that addresses the distinct health needs of First Nations communities. This course will bridge the knowledge gap, allowing GPs to more effectively collaborate with ACCHOs, enhance service delivery, and contribute to improved health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
