Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is well-recognised as a leading cause of illness in small children, but it is also a threat to older adults, especially those with underlying comorbid medical conditions. Older adults who contract RSV can experience complications including worsening of common cardiopulmonary comorbidities such as COPD, asthma, and congestive heart failure. Compared with younger age groups, older adults also experience longer hospital stays with RSV infection, and a greater risk of in-hospital death. Large, off-season outbreaks of RSV have occurred in Australia in recent years with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Early in 2024, the first RSV vaccine for adults aged 60 years and over became available in Australia. This webinar will help GPs and other primary healthcare providers to better understand the epidemiology of RSV in older adults with comorbidities in Australia and the importance of preventive measures, including RSV vaccination.

Methoxyflurane provides rapid short-term analgesia using a portable inhaler device. Its primary role is in the relief of pain in acute/emergency trauma, but it can also be used to relieve pain in clinic for brief surgical procedures such as the changing of wound dressings. Methoxyflurane is a non-opioid alternative to other Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)-listed agents in the Prescriber Bag, such as intravenous tramadol and morphine. This activity reviews the use of Penthrox® (methoxyflurane) for analgesia in the primary care setting focused on its primary indications in the emergency setting (PBS Prescriber Bag) and for private/planned procedures, including, but not limited to, intrauterine device (IUD)/contraceptive insertions, planned wound/laceration repair; skin excisions/lesion removal; biopsy; abscess incision and drain; ingrown nail removal; suturing; cyst removal; foreign body removal; and wart removal.

Allergic diseases are a growing health challenge in Australia, affecting about 20% of the population. Conditions like allergic rhinitis and asthma are prevalent, with food allergies also a concern, especially among children. Serum allergen-specific IgE testing (RAST) is a crucial tool for GPs in diagnosing allergies, helping them identify specific allergens for targeted advice on management. However, GPs need to understand the test's limitations and integrate its results into a broader clinical context for optimal patient care.

Practice Incentive Payments (PIPs) are essential for General Practitioners (GPs) as they stimulate advancements in patient care by promoting the uptake of best practices and inventive methodologies, resulting in enhanced health results. Specifically, PIPs hold significant importance for GPs involved in Aboriginal health as they contribute to tackling notable health inequalities and bolstering outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations. Utilising proposed Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles, we adopt a pragmatic strategy to pinpoint areas necessitating enhancement and adherence concerning PIPs.
