This clinical audit guides Australian GPs through a structured Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle to improve the management of cognitive dysfunction in major depressive disorder (MDD). Using a Cognitive Symptom Checklist and a validated questionnaire, participants assess cognitive domains such as executive functioning, memory, attention, and decision-making. The audit identifies cognitive impairments, and their impact on psychosocial functioning, and implements targeted interventions to enhance patient outcomes. GPs will audit a minimum of five patients diagnosed with depression in the past year, focusing on those who have relapsed or remain incompletely treated. Data collection involves structured patient assessments, clinician-recorded observations, and comparisons against best practice guidelines. Findings will inform treatment adjustments, ensuring a holistic, evidence-based approach that aligns with the Activity-Cognition-Emotion (ACE) model of MDD.Cognitive dysfunction in MDD is recognized as a critical treatment target, with impairments contributing significantly to both poor functional outcomes and lack of symptom relief. Addressing these impairments is essential for improving workplace performance, family and social relationships, and overall quality of life. By completing this audit, GPs refine their diagnostic and management strategies, optimize treatment plans, and ultimately improve patient care.
