Stigma can exclude people socially and economically based on real or perceived characteristics, and in healthcare it is a key driver of health inequity. It affects the quality of care at multiple points, from patient-clinician interactions to organisational policies, making it essential for health professionals to recognise and address. This short course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to identify, understand and reduce stigma in practice. Through pre-learning tasks, six online self-guided modules and live lectures, they explore how stigma arises, how it impacts patients and health systems, and how it can be challenged. Drawing on research and lived experience, the course offers evidence-based strategies and practical interventions to create inclusive, supportive healthcare environments. Participants will gain a strong theoretical foundation in why stigma exists, how stereotypes form, and how conscious and unconscious biases influence behaviour. They will reflect on language, practices and policies that may reinforce stigma and examine their own workplace context. By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to reduce stigma and build positive healthcare environments that improve outcomes for individuals and communities alike.
