This educational activity explores the shared physiological mechanisms of diabetes and obesity and provides advice on implementing evidence-based weight management strategies for people with type 2 diabetes, using a patient-centred approach. The two-part clinical audit asks GPs to assess their management of patients with T2D and overweight or obesity. In part one, GPs conduct a retrospective review to determine whether they are routinely monitoring for diabesity among patients with T2D and whether they routinely raise the issue of weight management in this setting. Following part one of the audit, GPs will reflect on their findings and consider actions that could enhance their practice in this area. In part two of the audit, GPs will recall patients with T2D and overweight or obesity and complete the ‘diabesity patient consultation checklist’ with each patient.

GooD4Mum provides education, resources and support to general practices through Quality Improvement Collaborative methodologies including Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles [10], to provide clinical guideline concordant [11, 12]education, resources [13] and interactive peer-to-peer and peer-to-expert learning workshops to support GPs’ behavioural change toward optimising proactive chronic disease prevention for women who have had gestational diabetes. Not all GPs or other clinicians at participating practices need to be involved, but the more the better. The current GooD4Mum Quality Improvement Collaborative program is an updated version of the pilot [14]. The GooD4Mum research study will compare outcomes from general practices that are participating in the GooD4Mum Collaborative program with passive ‘de-identified data-only’ control practices, to strengthen the evidence base for the GooD4Mum program – a step toward program scale-up.

GPs are invited to complete a clinical audit in which they identify patients previously diagnosed with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and recall those patients to conduct a review of their current management. The audit process requires GPs to identify whether the patient is experiencing current HF symptoms, assess whether the patient is receiving guideline-recommended treatment for their HFrEF, and to check the current management of co-existing conditions or factors that exacerbate their HF. The audit culminates in a reflection activity where GPs are encouraged to consider changes they could make to improve the way they monitor and review patients with HFrEF.

Domestic violence (DV) is a pattern of behaviour where one partner is usually exerting power and control over the other partner over time. DV is the highest contributor to morbidity and mortality for Australian women of child-bearing age, and has significant health impacts on the whole family. Patients experiencing DV first tell a doctor or a nurse about the abuse before other professionals, however the majority of health practitioners do not ask about abuse. The World Health Organisation, professional bodies and state-based inquiries all recommend health practitioners be trained to respond to DV. The National Plan to end violence against women 2022-2032 calls for early intervention across sectors to identify and support individuals and families experiencing or at risk of DV. The National Plan also calls for services to engage with men using violence through perpetrator interventions. GPs are in a unique position to help men who have used DV to identify and reflect on their readiness to seek help before violence escalates. Despite this, few GPs receive specific training to support them to work with patients using DV. This workshop helps to address the need to train and support GPs to do this work well. It provides GPs with an introduction to enhancing their skills and confidence to respond to patients experiencing or using domestic violence using motivational interviewing strategies that are appropriate to the patient’s different stages of action and change.
