At least 1 in 250 Australians carry a disease-causing variant that puts them at risk of mitochondrial disease during their lifetime. Presenting at any age, affecting any organ, and with a wide spectrum of symptoms from mild chronic disease to acute episodes or fatal illness, mitochondrial disease presents a diagnostic challenge in general practice. The GP’s position as an accessible and approachable member of the healthcare team means that they have a pivotal role to play in promoting the physical, mental and emotional health of their patients with mitochondrial disease. This activity focuses on the timely identification, appropriate initial management, optimal referral of patients with suspected mitochondrial disease and an emphasis towards confirmed genetic diagnosis, where possible. It will also aim to improve capacity for general practitioners (GPs) to support newly diagnosed patients and their carers.

People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, or asexual/agender (LGBTQIA+) often face serious health inequities compared to the general population, as well as additional challenges due to marginalisation and harrassment.1,2 This 1-hour educational activity is designed to empower GPs to create a safer and more welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ people in order to provide them with more holistic and patient-centred healthcare.3 The module explores some of the health issues that can be affected by a person’s gender or sexual orientation, and uses case studies and examples to demonstrate how to incorporate inclusive language, attitudes and systems within primary care. It also provides an extensive list of information resources and further training that GPs can access to learn more about health-related issues facing LGBTQIA+ people in Australia.
