Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a leading cause of common respiratory presentations in children. It can cause cold symptoms, and in infants and preschool children, may present as bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. While severe disease requires hospital care, the vast majority of children with RSV will present to their GP. An updated understanding of the emerging trends in epidemiology, severity and evidence-based management will enable GPs to ensure timely identification of this illness and to direct care to the safest and most appropriate approaches, based on the symptoms of the child, and their at-risk characteristics.

Bronchiolitis is a common chest infection in young children caused by a viral infection of the lungs. It leads to inflammation and mucus buildup in the airways, resulting in breathing difficulties.Bronchiolitis is most common in babies under six months but sometimes occurs in babies up to 12 months old.As Australian GPs are usually the first clinicians to assess a child with Bronchiolitis, it is important that changing epidemiology and presentations remain front of mind, alongside an appreciation of at-risk children, evidence-based management, and emerging options for mitigating RSV effects in the community.

The mini audit Optimising Veteran Patient Care is designed to address the unique healthcare needs of veterans and enhance the ability of General Practitioners (GPs) to provide optimal, patient-centered care. Each year, approximately 6,000 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel transition to civilian life, with 20% leaving for medical reasons. These individuals often face complex health challenges, including physical injuries, mental health conditions, and chronic illnesses, necessitating tailored healthcare services. GPs play a pivotal role in delivering comprehensive care to veterans, who represent a patient population with distinct needs stemming from their service.

Approximately 6,000 personnel leave the Australian Defence Force annually, with around 20% transitioning for medical reasons. These individuals require tailored healthcare services to address both immediate and long-term health issues, highlighting the need for specialised training among healthcare providers.Comprehensive health assessments, such as the Veteran Health Check, are vital tools for identifying and managing common health conditions among veterans. The webinar will cover appropriate utilisation of the Veteran Health Check Assessment Tool, including specific screening processes for conditions like PTSD, hearing loss, and musculoskeletal issues. Additionally, it will provide strategies for effective care planning based on assessment results. Case studies will demonstrate effective use of DVA services and support structures while highlighting the importance of coordination between GPs and allied health professionals.

Improving research capacity in general practice has the potential to increase efficiency in care delivery, create proactive preventative preventions, identify at-risk populations and inform health strategy. To build a robust general practice research sector, practices and GPs need to be supported in developing research understanding and how to embed research into practice. Through completing the PARTNER Network education package, a general understanding of key research principles and clinical trial processes will be gained. The PARTNER Network education module content includes:Recognition that conducting research in general practice is important to help improve the health and wellbeing of Australians and people that participate in clinical trials have better outcomes, acknowledgement that Australians living in rural areas do not have equitable access to clinical trials, and understanding how the PARTNER Network will increase capacity; Description of the differences between cluster and individually randomised controlled trials, a summary of how general practices and general practice staff are involved throughout the lifecycle of a clinical trial, and lists of types of information about clinical trials that should be considered when participating; and Real world examples to provide an overview of how clinical trials could be conducted in their general practice and to assist in strategy and planning for research involvement.

This course addresses the learning needs of GPs by practically demonstrating how to apply and accurately enter data to ensure compliance with Aboriginal national Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Through interactive sessions and screen capture videos, GPs will learn to effectively utilise data entry systems and ensure that their practice meets the required standards. This practical approach not only enhances the accuracy of data reporting but also equips GPs with the skills necessary to monitor and improve health outcomes for Aboriginal patients, ultimately contributing to closing the health disparity gap and promoting culturally competent care.
