Heart failure (HF) affects over 511,000 Australians, with numbers expected to rise to 750,000, placing increasing pressure on the healthcare system. General practitioners (GPs) are essential to improving HF outcomes through early diagnosis, initiation, and titration of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT). Despite proven treatments, many patients do not receive appropriate GDMT or reach target doses, leading to preventable hospitalisations and higher mortality. This clinical audit is highly relevant to GPs, aiming to close gaps between evidence-based guidelines and clinical practice. It supports GPs in recognising and addressing barriers such as knowledge gaps, clinical inertia, and patient-related challenges. By participating, GPs will strengthen their confidence in applying GDMT, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to reducing the burden of HF on the healthcare system.

GPs frequently manage patients with reflux-related symptoms. With up to 20% of adults experiencing heartburn weekly and over 195 million PPI prescriptions dispensed in Australia between 2013 and 2021, reflux management is a routine but evolving challenge in primary care. Despite PBS efforts to curb high-dose PPI use, reliance on PPIs remains strong, and many patients continue to experience persistent or breakthrough symptoms. This module provides GPs with practical tools to optimise reflux management through a multi-modal approach. It outlines the use of empiric PPI trials, the role of on-demand medications for breakthrough symptoms, and strategies for tapering or adjusting therapy in line with updated guidelines. GPs will learn how to manage patients who ask, “Why is my PPI not working?”, and gain confidence in addressing refractory symptoms. By completing this activity, GPs ultimately improving patient outcomes and aligning with evidence-based care.

This online learning module is relevant to rural GPs, who are often central to the ongoing, whole-person care of people living with HIV, particularly in areas where access to specialist HIV, mental health, and peer support services may be limited. The module will assist rural GPs to develop practical skills in using PozQoL to identify quality-of-life concerns, support person-centred discussion, interpret patient-reported results, and guide appropriate care planning, follow-up, and referral within routine general practice.
