AimCultural Responsiveness Training for GPs and Practices has been formed by the Voices of First Nation peoples. The value of yarning in consultations is now accepted but is rarely applied, but this training involves real-life scenarios and has been delivered by an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO) working with Traditional Owners / Elders and GPs/Indigenous Health Professionals. Participants learn the skills of entering culturally responsive conversations and how to apply these so as to improve health outcomes amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. As Prime Minister Scott Morrison said "We … thought we understood their problems better than they did. We don't. They live them. We must see the gap we wish to close, not from our viewpoints, but from the viewpoint of Indigenous Australians.”RelevanceThis training provides practical instruction around clinical yarning, namely the social, diagnostic, health management yarning that has the potential to improve outcomes for patients and practitioners (Australian Journal of Clinical Health). The training has been developed by an Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Organisation working with Traditional Owners / Elders and Indigenous and non-Indigenous health professionals to share the knowledge and wisdom from inside the First Nation culture. This training creates true bridges of communication between two World Views.
