Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease and major driver of cardiometabolic morbidity in Australian primary care. Yet intervention often remains reactive and opportunistic, rather than systematic and proactive. This masterclass will focus on practical, real-world strategies for GPs to identify high-risk patients earlier, initiate constructive weight-related conversations, and apply evidence-based management to improve outcomes. Faculty will explore the pathophysiology of obesity within the cardiometabolic continuum, contemporary therapeutic options (including pharmacological agents where appropriate), and the implications for diabetes, cardiovascular and renal risk. Demonstrations of data-driven patient identification methods (including SQL/query-based searches and supportive 'pre-care' outreach to patients) will illustrate how practices can prioritise patients most likely to benefit. The session includes interactive case discussion and performance-reflective Qandamp;A, and is paired with a structured post-work component enabling participants to undertake real patient reviews to apply concepts immediately in practice..

Pain is one of the earliest and most debilitating symptoms of pancreatic cancer, affecting over 60% of patients at diagnosis. Unlike many other malignancies, the pain associated with pancreatic cancer is often complex, arising from a combination of visceral, somatic, and neuropathic mechanisms. It may be caused by direct tumour invasion, inflammation, ductal obstruction, or cancer treatment itself. This complexity means that pain management must be highly individualised and multi-modal. Furthermore, up to 30% of cancer patients experience pain that is refractory to standard pharmacologic management, especially in the later stages of pancreatic cancer. This activity is designed to reinforce and upskill knowledge relating to the management of pancreatic cancer pain and pathways that support timely access to palliative care and effective pain management for people with pancreatic cancer, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Chronic diseases are on the rise and represent a significant and growing burden in Australia. Nearly half (49.9%) of Australians have at least one chronic condition, and chronic diseases account for approximately 85% of the total disease burden. Obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease are among the most common and costly of these conditions, with lifestyle factors—especially poor nutrition and physical inactivity—being major contributors.Lifestyle medicine—encompassing six pillars: whole food, plant-based nutrition (core pillar), —has been shown to be highly effective in improving and even reversing chronic disease. Robust evidence from both international and Australian studies demonstrates that plant-based and whole food, plant-predominant dietary patterns are associated with lower rates of obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and all-cause mortality.

The importance of good medical record keeping cannot be overstated. They are a vital part of quality ongoing patient care, both for you and for other involved practitioners. They are a Medicare and Medical Board requirement and can improve the defensibility of a claim of complaint. Understanding how AI tools can be used to provide greater efficiency and accuracy in record keeping while keeping within the medico legal boundaries is critical. This activity explores the use of AI scribes in practice, providing opportunities to explore AI tools.

This course introduces the dermatoscope, a key diagnostic tool for examining skin lesions and supporting early detection of skin cancer. Participants will learn what a dermatoscope is, how it differs from a magnifying glass, and how polarised light allows clinicians to visualise subsurface structures such as pigment, vessels and patterns not visible to the naked eye. Content covers practical device use in standard and difficult locations, capturing high quality clinical and dermatoscopic images, and ensuring secure medico legal storage. Guidance is also provided on care and maintenance, including cleaning, glass plate care and battery management. By the end participants will understand how to operate a dermatoscope, document findings safely, and apply dermatoscopy confidently in daily practice, building a strong foundation for accurate diagnosis, professional development and quality patient care.

Heart failure (HF) is a leading cause of hospitalisation and a growing contributor to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs across Australia. Driven by an ageing population and increasing prevalence of obesity, type 2 diabetes, CKD and ASCVD, HF often coexists with multimorbidity, creating complex diagnostic and management challenges for GPs. Despite evolving guidelines, real-world practice reveals persistent gaps: late or missed diagnosis, delayed initiation of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT), and uncertainty around treatment escalation or referral. This program provides practical, primary care-focused education to close the gap between evidence and day-to-day management. Through an interactive, case-based approach, it reviews current HF guidelines, clarifies the role of ejection fraction in diagnosis and therapy, and addresses practical strategies for initiating and titrating GDMT, overcoming treatment barriers, and integrating non-pharmacological and lifestyle interventions. The session also explores when to move beyond GDMT, including palliative and supportive care, and reinforces whole-of-practice coordination for improved outcomes. By focusing on real-world application, this masterclass equips GPs with the knowledge and tools to optimise care for patients living with or at risk of heart failure.
