Community based sentinel surveillance of infectious diseases in general practice assists in the monitoring and control of influenza and influenza-like illness. In the event of a pandemic it provides information to Government about the epidemiology of the pandemic influenza strain, and its distribution and spread. Influenza and COVID-19 remain difficult to diagnose clinically and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, especially in the elderly. Participation in this activity aims to improve the diagnosis of influenza and COVID-19 in general practice. Active participation in ASPREN surveillance improves GPs knowledge of the incidence, distribution and identification of influenza, COVID-19 and influenza-like illness in their community. GPs are well placed to monitor the impact ofinfluenza in the community and facilitate the identification of predominant circulating viruses. ASPREN GPs are requested to monitor the number of consultations for influenza like illness (ILI) during each calendar year. Laboratory diagnosis is provided for confirmation of suspected cases of influenza and influenza-like illnesses. Participation provides the opportunity for GPs to refine their clinical diagnosis of influenza and allow for confirmation of other respiratory virus infections. The provision of a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis provides an opportunity for GPs to discuss implications for prevention and treatment with their patients.
