The ALS course aims to teach the theory and practical skills to effectively manage a deteriorating patient aiming to prevent cardiorespiratory arrest in this peri-arrest situations. It also aims to teach structures for clinical assessment and management of the patient with cardiac arrest using the best available evidence. The ALS course provides a standardised systematic approach to deteriorating patient assessment and immediate management as well as cardiopulmonary resuscitation in adults. A standardised approach for all has the potential for those who have attended the course arriving at a clinical emergency working much more cohesively and increasing the teamwork effectiveness between them. They will have the same approach to assessment and management of the critical situation and as such potentially minimise errors. Communication is enhanced by the use of a standard tool for handover and escalation of care taught on the course. The course is targeted at doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who are expected to provide ALS in and out of hospital. The multidisciplinary nature of the course encourages efficient teamwork. By training together, all ALS providers are given the opportunity to gain experience as both resuscitation team members all roles.
