The symptom and its impact on the woman's life is often very subjective, and there exist many myths and mistaken beliefs as to what is normal and how heavy periods should be managed that sees many women suffer needlessly. Optimal wound care, appropriate dressing selection, and early infection prevention are critical to minimise complications, reduce the need for transfer, and improve long-term outcomes.In this ACRRM Tele-Derm webinar, Dr Carl Lisec will provide a practical update on contemporary burns management with a particular focus on what rural GPs and rural generalists can do in the first hours and days after injury.Learning outcomesBy the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:Differentiate between burn depths and estimate burn size to guide appropriate management and referral.Describe best-practice initial burn wound care, including cooling, cleansing, and analgesia.Select appropriate dressings for common burn types and locations seen in rural and remote settings.Identify early signs of burn wound infection and outline an evidence-based approach to prevention and treatment.About the presenter:Carl Lisec is a general surgeon and full time staff specialist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH). He completed a burn fellowship at the Professor Stuart Pegg Adult Burn Centre in 2013, followed by further training in Emergency General Surgery. He is currently the Director of the Trauma Service at RBWH. He also has an academic appointment at the University of Queensland. He has served on the ANZBA board previously as the State Representative for Queensland.He is a surgical team member for AUSMAT and sits on various committees, notably the BRANZ steering committee, the EMSB committee and the Queensland Trauma Committee. He is the current hospital supervisor for the SET program in general surgery. He is also a senior instructor on the EMSB course. His interests are in the management of severe burns, severe traumatic injury and trauma system improvements.

REST covers many of the common emergencies that are likely to present in the pre-hospital, small rural hospital and private rural practice environment. The aim of this course is to teach a structured approach to the initial resuscitation and stabilisation of patients presenting with life-threatening conditions and to enhance the practical skills required for managing emergencies in the rural context. The Course is facilitated by Rural Generalists with experience in Emergency Medicine, for Rural Generalists. Participants complete approximately 12 hours of self-directed online learning, followed by two hands-on workshop days. You’ll leave with skills in basic life support, along with more advanced skills and techniques to assist with managing life-threatening injuries and conditions.

Designed by Rural Generalists, the Advanced Life Support Level 2 (ALS2) course was created to meet the needs of rural doctors to support and enable them to exceed the standards set by the Australian Resuscitation Council. This two-day course provides you with the knowledge and skills to demonstrate your competency and improve your confidence in leading and managing Advanced Life Support presentations in rural clinical settings.The first component of the course is self-directed online learning and is designed to refresh and reinforce ALS guidelines, update new recommendations and evidence, and review the pharmacology and relevant pathophysiology components required to succeed in the course. The online modules will take approximately one day to complete.The second part of the course is delivered face-to-face. This training focuses on reinforcing your experience and knowledge by applying the online learning content and contextualising it to the rural environment. Delivered in a peer-to-peer learning environment, the one-day face-to-face training allows you to work with facilitators and other participants on a variety of real-world scenarios to demonstrate competency.
