This program aims to deliver resources and training to general practice to improve the response of primary care to families, in particular to women and children experiencing family violence. The program will provide direct tailored support to primary care providers, to improve collaboration and build greater cohesion and coordination across a range of local health, social care and family violence services. The program consists of facilitated online training (delivered across 2 sessions) which is provided by skilled GP educators and a Family Violence Support Worker, and a basic audit of each practice. Distance learning modules will also be completed in GPs own time, and practice specific follow up will support connection of the GPs with appropriate local services. The first practice online training session allows for a whole of practice discussion of the role of a practice in responding to patients, particularly women and children, who may be experiencing family violence and how the practice might facilitate or inhibit an effective response. The second practice online training session focuses on the role of GPs and nurses. The use of role-play provides clinicians with the opportunity to try out different ways of providing care and experiment with different communication styles and techniques. The program will enable GPs to reflect on their practice, access new material and tools, and be involved in role-plays and experiential learning.

People who use domestic violence have an increased risk of alcohol and substance abuse, rates of depression, suicidal thoughts, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and increased use of health services.(1, 2) The National Plan to end violence against women calls for services to engage with men using violence through perpetrator interventions that hold them to account and support them to change their harmful behaviour.(3) GPs are in a unique position to help men who have used domestic violence to identify and reflect on their behaviour causing concern and to support early intervention before violence escalates. Despite this, few GPs receive specific training to support them to work with patients using domestic and family violence.(4) We are trialling a primary care-based intervention to increase GP capacity to work with men using violence, using the I-ENGAGE model and a digital intervention called Better Man. I-ENGAGE is a model for primary health system responses to men using violence developed within the Safer Families Centre of Research Excellence. It is a stepwise approach for GPs to identify and engage with men using violence and to provide them with a range of tools to support behavioral change, from digital interventions to on-referral for specialist support. The Better Man website is an evidence-based digital tool for men using DFV which can be offered by GPs to their patients to build readiness, knowledge and skills for behaviour change. (5, 6)
