The Obstetric and Gynaecology Education and Training (OGET) program is a structured initiative designed to enhance the capability of General Practitioner Obstetricians (GPOs) and other healthcare professionals in providing high-quality obstetric and gynaecological care in rural and remote communities. Through case-based discussions, peer learning, and hands-on training, the program aims to strengthen clinical confidence and improve service delivery where specialist support is limited. As part of the OGET project, a specialised procedural skills program has been developed to address a workforce skill gap—the prevention, recognition, and management of Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASI).This simulation-based training provides GPOs, trainees, midwives, and other rural healthcare providers with essential, evidence-based skills to recognise and repair OASI in low-resource settings. Each OASI program session is facilitated by a Lead Facilitator, with support from Support Facilitators, who may include RANZCOG Fellows, Trainees, GPOs, or Midwives. By embedding this training within the OGET framework, the program ensures ongoing professional development, strengthened clinical networks, and increased service capacity in rural and remote areas, ultimately supporting safer, more sustainable maternity care across Australia.
