Respiratory presentations contribute greatly to the burden of disease and are common presentations in Australian general practice. 11% of the population live with asthma, and 33% use daily medication to manage their symptoms. COPD is a common medical condition with approximately 5% of adults aged andgt; 45 years COPD. COPD is a debilitating condition and was the 5th leading cause of death in 2018. Spirometry is the most common lung function test and is essential to supporting the diagnosis of asthma and COPD as well as to monitor disease progression and response to treatment. Spirometry is underutilised in primary care leading to the misdiagnosis and delay in diagnosis of asthma and COPD. This interactive CPD activity will assist GPs interpret the results of spirometry tests based on the updated guidelines from the National Asthma Council of Australia. It utilises multiple case studies so GPs can enhance their skills in interpreting spirometry and integrate these findings with other clinical information to form a diagnosis and guide management.

This education offers a practical approach to the clinical and biochemical assessment of the man presenting with a clinical suspicion of hypogonadism. This will help the GP to first, recognise pitfalls in the evaluation of androgen deficiency, second, to distinguish organic from functional hypogonadism and third, to decide when, and when not, to consider testosterone treatment.

This How to Treat offers current information on the evidence for the effectiveness of lifestyle measures as well as of the risks and benefits of testosterone therapy in men with functional hypogonadism. It aims to ensure GPs are proficient in managing men with organic hypogonadism with testosterone replacement and be aware of different testosterone formulations, as well as of contraindications to testosterone replacement. This How to Treat will also ensure the GP is confident in managing older men who present with (often non-specific) androgen-deficiency like symptoms and lowered serum testosterone in the absence of organic hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis pathology (that is, with so called functional hypogonadism).

The relief of pain and suffering is one of the most common reasons for seeking acute medical care. Sadly pain is often poorly managed in the acutely ill or injured patient with research identifying that at least a half of adults and two thirds of children who experience significantly painful conditions receivenoanalgesia when they present for acute care. Even when analgesia is provided it is often ineffective. So pervasive is the problem that researchers have coined the term “oligoanalgesia” and hundreds of studies have been published in an attempt to understand how pain management can be improved in the setting of emergency medical practice.

This education reviews the current concepts of aetiology, diagnosis and management of bone marrow failure syndromes. While most GPs will rarely encounter bone marrow failure, it has significant consequences for both the patient and their family. It aims to ensure GPs can recognise some of the features in a cytopenic patient that may indicate an underlying bone marrow failure syndrome, and introduce some of the principles of management for these conditions.
