Seeking a suitably qualified Senior Medical Officer to join our team of dedicated professionals delivering excellence in health care to the Indigenous community of Palm Island. The position is being offered on either a permanent or temporary basis.

About the role
The purpose of this position is to provide high quality clinical services, and in particular ACRRM trainee and junior doctor supervision and training, as a part of the multidisciplinary team delivering integrated primary, community, and secondary level health services to the Indigenous community of Palm Island. Cultural safety is paramount. The medical officers of Joyce Palmer Health Service (JPHS) will work in the Palm Island Primary Care Centre on rotation, and they will assist in maintaining functional connections between the Centres to ensure continuity of care for patients.

JPHS has 15 beds, a 2 bay Emergency Department, a satellite haemodialysis unit, pharmacy, and x-ray (provided by licenced x-ray operators). The Palm Island Health Action Plan 2018 – 2028 guides delivery of comprehensive services. Primary health care services are delivered from a separate location, Palm Island Primary Health Care Centre, with its own leadership in collaboration with JPHS and are transitioning to community control. JPHS will develop more aged care services over the coming years.

Permanent or Temporary up to two (2) years (Full-time or Part-time, hours negotiable).

Remuneration package of up to $558,548 p.a., comprising base salary range of $182,106 - $ 266,677 p.a. (+ applicable allowances/benefits) (L13-L27), recreational leave loading (17.5%), and employer contribution to superannuation (12.75%) attraction and retention incentive allowance, regional and rural attraction allowance, motor vehicle allowance, professional development allowance and leave, private practice arrangements, communications package, professional indemnity cover and inaccessibility allowance (if applicable).

Role requirements

  • A Fellowed and experienced Rural Generalist who is eligible for accreditation as a supervisor – FACRRM or FRACGP with appropriate rural/remote experience.
  • Demonstrated capability and experience in at least one of the following Advanced Skills disciplines is highly desirable: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Remote Medicine or Emergency Medicine. Demonstrated capability in procedural anaesthetics and/or obstetrics would be well regarded.

About Palm Island
Palm Island is the largest island in the Palm group, situated about 70 kilometres north of Townsville and is home to the largest Aboriginal community in Australia of approximately 4,000 people.  The Joyce Palmer Health Service was officially opened in July 2000 and was named in honour of the late Joyce Palmer, a Palm Island nurse, recognized for her many years of service and dedication to the Palm Island community.

The Palm Island Health Action Plan 2018 – 2028 outlines the direction for primary health care development and transition to community control.  The actions in the Plan will assist the community address the burden of chronic disease to live healthier and longer lives.

The Joyce Palmer Health Service is an integrated service with 15 hospital beds, outpatient and emergency facilities, antenatal services, and primary health care through a range of community health programs provided via PICC. Services include child health, elderly, trauma, pre and postnatal, chronic conditions, mental health, sexual and reproductive health clients. The new Palm Island Primary Health Care Centre and Joyce Palmer Health Service will work closely together to ensure provision of comprehensive, seamless care to the people of Palm Island.
