Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

Don't come for the job.
Even though—yes—it's actually a really good job at both locations.

Taupō Hospital

We're talking about a rural hospital with:

  • 17 inpatient beds
  • A 14-bed emergency department
  • Our very own CT scanner
  • Visiting specialists
  • Regular endoscopy and theatre lists
  • A senior team made up of experienced emergency clinicians and rural generalists

We're not just keeping the lights on—we're building something real: a centre of rural excellence with a strong commitment to rural generalism and training the next generation of doctors.

Greymouth Hospital - West Coast
Our team has fully embraced the Rural Generalist Model, ensuring equitable, high-quality care across our community. The Rural Generalist team is dynamic, multi-disciplinary, and highly skilled - offering you an unparalleled breadth of experience across our rural hospital and community-based services.

But again: don't come just for the job.

Come for the journey.

Taupō
Come for the lake. The mountains. The trails. The trout. The ski fields. The hot pools. The festivals. The small-town hospitality with big energy. The adventure, the serenity—and the moments that feel straight out of a movie.
(Yes, that movie. The one with the hobbits, the ring, and the stunning backdrops that looked suspiciously like… Taupō.)

Come because Taupō isn't just where you live—it's how you live.

In 20 minutes, you can go from ward round to volcanic ridge hike. From suturing in ED to sipping your favourite lakeside beverage. Whether you're forest bathing or jet skiing, this place has just the right mix of adrenaline and calm.

Greymouth - West Coast
Come for the wild coastlines. The ancient rainforests. The glaciers. The gold mining heritage. The rugged beauty of the West Coast. The tight-knit community where everyone knows your name. The adventure that comes with living where the mountains meet the sea.

Outside of work, the West Coast will inspire you. Whether it's tramping through ancient rainforests, surfing wild coastlines, mountain biking rugged trails, or kayaking pristine rivers - adventure is just outside your doorstep. Bring your boots, board, bike, and paddle - you'll need them all!

The Role:

Taupō Position:
You'll rotate across ward, clinic/outreach, and ED - depending on your skills and preferences. If you have an advanced skill, we can work on how best to use it.

Greymouth Position:
Work across wards and acute areas alongside our dedicated Rural Generalist Team and both local and visiting specialists.

What You'll Be Part Of:
A Truly Generalist Experience - Work across primary care, urgent care, emergency medicine, general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and obstetrics/gynaecology

Supportive Training & Supervision - Learn from a team of experienced SMOs, ACRRM Fellows, GPs, and FACEMs who are committed to developing your clinical confidence, practical skills, and autonomy

A Multi-Disciplinary Approach - Work with in-house specialists (obstetrics/gynaecology, general surgery) and benefit from 'TransAlpine' partnerships with tertiary specialists for additional support and training

We are accredited for:

  • Rural Hospital Medicine Training Programme (RHMTP)
  • Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) – for secondary and emergency care rotations
  • FACEM Special Skills Placement (SSP) support for ACEM trainees

About You:

You're at least PGY3 and have ticked off a range of runs—medical, surgical, paeds, and some solid time in Emergency Medicine. Ideally, you've already worked in a rural or provincial setting.

You'll also have:

  • ACLS, APLS, NLS, and ATLS or their equivalents (EMST, ETM)
  • Eligibility for Medical Council of New Zealand registration
