About the Role:
Join our
dedicated team as a Medical Consultant Rural Generalist –
Emergency/Inpatients and provide high-quality, person-centred care in a
dynamic rural hospital environment. Based within the Flinders and Upper North
Local Health Network, you will lead the clinical management of patients across
both the Emergency Department and Inpatient Unit, working closely with
multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe and effective care. Your role also
includes providing after-hours Code Blue support and contributing to a 24/7
roster.
You’ll be
instrumental in shaping and advancing care models, such as fast-tracking,
nurse-led strategies, and criteria-led discharges, all while promoting
innovation and collaboration across teams. This position offers a unique
opportunity to engage in strategic planning, quality improvement activities,
clinical governance, and staff education—including the supervision and training
of junior staff and ongoing professional development.

The
appointment to the Head of Unit (HOU) position is for a minimum term of
12 months, up to a maximum of 5 years. This leadership role includes the Small
Unit Managerial Allowance, as outlined in clause 4.3.2 of the SA Medical
Officers Award.
Reporting
directly to the Executive Director Medical Services (EDMS), the HOU will take
on key responsibilities in addition to their clinical duties as a Medical
Consultant. These leadership responsibilities are carried out within the
existing contracted hours, with up to two (2) days per fortnight allocated as
non-clinical time to support service planning, team development, and clinical
governance activities.

Medical Workforce
About You: Medical Consultant - Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of
Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent.
- Fellowship of the Australian College
Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) or the Royal Australian College of General
Practice (RACGP) and registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a
Medical Practitioner with Specialist registration; or another qualification as
defined in the SA Medical Officers Award.
- Extensive experience in rural
clinical practice.
- Experience in the delivery of
emergency care in a clinical setting.
- Demonstrated skills in
resuscitation, airway maintenance and circulatory support.
- Demonstrated experience in the
operational management of retrievals of critically ill patients.
- Experience working as part of a
multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience working with a diverse
client group, including mental health clients and paediatrics.
- Experience with the supervision and
teaching of undergraduate and post graduate medical staff.
- Proven experience in delivering high
quality and safe care consistent with the National Safety and Quality Health
Care Service Standards.
