The
Opportunity: Are you a medical leader passionate
about supporting Indigenous health and driving clinical excellence? This unique
non-clinical leadership role offers the chance to make a lasting impact on the
delivery of integrated health services to the vibrant and culturally rich
community of Palm Island. In this role, you’ll provide strategic
medical leadership and guidance to Senior Medical Officers at Joyce Palmer
Health Service (JPHS). You’ll play a key role in supporting clinicians,
strengthening clinical governance, and fostering collaboration between JPHS and
the Bwgcolman Healing Centre (formerly Palm Island Primary Health Care
Centre).
This position is central to maintaining
functional connections between hospital and primary care teams, ensuring
continuity of care and culturally responsive service delivery. You’ll also
contribute to medical education planning and build strong relationships with
the Palm Island Community Company (PICC).
This role may be accredited as a RACMA
training location linked to Townsville University Hospital.
About Palm Island
Located 70 km north of Townsville, Palm Island is home to Australia’s largest Aboriginal community—around 4,000 people. The island is rich in culture, history, and resilience, offering a unique opportunity to work in partnership with the community to improve health outcomes.
Joyce Palmer Health Service, opened in 2000 and named after a beloved local nurse, is a 15-bed integrated facility offering emergency, outpatient, antenatal, and community health services. Together with the Bwgcolman Healing Centre, the services provide comprehensive care across child health, chronic disease, mental health, sexual and reproductive health, and more.
This role
supports the goals of the Palm Island Health Action Plan 2018–2028, which
aims to reduce chronic disease and empower the community to live healthier,
longer lives.
Key
Responsibilities - Provide medical leadership and

other community stakeholders
Requirements To be considered for this role,
candidates must meet the following criteria:
Fellowship of either: - The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM) or equivalent Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP-RG) i.e., Rural Generalist or FRACGP candidates with similar rural and / or ED experience.
OR - Royal Australian College of Medical
administrators (RACMA)
- Post graduate qualifications and
demonstrated capability and experience in at least one of the following
Advanced Skills disciplines is highly desirable: Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Health, Emergency Medicine, Rural and Remote.
- AFRACMA or previous leadership
experience would be ideal for Primary Care specialists with either FACRRM or
FRACGP/ FRACGP-RG
What’s
on Offer? - Temporary Part-time position for 3
years, 40 hours per fortnight
- Pro rata remuneration package based
on full-time equivalent value of up to $598,550 p.a., comprising base salary
range $100.78 - $127.77 p.h. (L18-L27)
- Attraction and retention incentive
allowance (35% base salary)
- Regional and rural attraction
allowance (10% base salary)
- Motor vehicle allowance between
$21,000 and $25,500 p.a.
- Professional development allowance
of $21,500 p.a. + 3.6 weeks p.a. leave
- Inaccessibility allowance of $48,300 p.a.

and generous leave entitlements - A Clinical/Medical Managers
Allowance will be paid fortnightly. Appointment level will be dependent
upon experience and qualifications.
